History
The roots of Dassault Aviation go all the way back to 1929. The original company was founded by French aircraft industrialist Marcel Bloch as Société des Avions Marcel Bloch. Although the company was nationalized in 1936, Marcel Bloch remained as a prominent director and was asked to act as delegated administrator of the Minister for Air. However, when France was occupied by Germany during World War II and its aviation industry was effectively shut down, he was imprisoned for refusing to collaborate with the German aviation industry. He was deported to a concentration camp and remained there until it was liberated towards the end of the war. After the war, he changed his name to Marcel Dassault and his company became known as Avions Marcel Dassault. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Dassault was heavily focused on developing electronic technologies such as airborne radars, infrared seeker heads, bombing aids, and navigation systems. In the late 1960s, Dassault was tasked to specialize in military and business aircraft, while other manufacturers were allocated different roles in the aviation industry. After Marcel Dassault's passing in 1986, his son, Serge Dassault, took over leadership of the company along with the current CEO, Charles Edelstenne. Throughout its multiple name changes, mergers, and share exchanges, it wasn't until the 1990s when the company would finally be renamed to its current name, Dassault Aviation.
Working closely with and within the French government and arms industry throughout the entirety of the company's existence, Dassault Aviation has nearly a century of experience creating innovative, reliable, and efficient aircraft, such as the renowned Mirage and Rafale combat aircraft. Dassault's dual specialization in business jets lead to the inception of the well-known civilian Falcon line, which are still some of the most prominent aircraft in the business jet industry today.
